Product Description

A Claylin floor is a poured and sealed earth masonry floor for use in areas where durable floor surface is required. Claylin is a blended mix of sands, clays, fibers and pigments. Dried in place and sealed with a mix of Tung Oil, Special Aged Linseed Oil, Beeswax, Pine Rosin, Citrus Solvent and Pine TerpenesClaylin floors are unique. The finished surface has slight highs and lows from the hand troweling process. The hand troweling process also leaves an irregular texture and shine. These are all considered normal and apart of the overall beauty of an Claylin floor. The typical installation process takes 2 weeks, some take longer depending on thickness and size.      

Area of application 

Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, sun rooms, dance spaces, yoga spaces, crafting spaces and offices.

Composition

Made of sand, clay soils, straw and sealed with oil blend (linseed oil, tung oil, pine rosin, beeswax and dipentene (a mixture of citrus and pine turpenes). 

Dimensions

Floor needs to be at least 3/4” thick. If poured over hydronic tubes the thickness needs to be at least 1 inch above exterior of tubes. If leveling out an unlevel sub floor and you need to level more than ½” difference, it is best to pour a leveling base pour then a ¾” finish pour. 

Finishes

The dried sand, clay, fiber mix is sealed with ClaylinTM Oil.

Textures

Different densities, different granule sizes and the hand work of the trowel give different appearances and textures to the finish floor.

Weight

Claylin floor weight of 130 pounds per cubic feet therefore at     

¾” = 7.5 pound per square foot         

1" = 10 pounds per square foot

1 ½” = 15.5 pounds per square foot

2” = 20 pounds per square foot

Performance and Durability

With good care a Claylin floor could last 30 or more years.
 

Chemical Properties

The initial oiling of the floor release natural occurring VOC’s from the citrus oil, this lasts 3-7 days. The smell of the curing drying oils (linseed oil and tung oil) lasts about 3-5 months and is non toxic.
 

Thermal Properties

Claylin floors have excellent thermal mass properties.
 

Fire Resistance

Non flammable.
 

Moisture Behavior

The finish repels water. Any unrepaired dings below oil finish are vulnerable to the water damage.
 

Biological Resistance

Mold resistance if laid and dried in a timely manner and correctly. 
 

Sound and Noise

Some echoing from the hard surface.
 

Light

Colors do not fade with exposure to U.V.
 

Odor

Construction Schedule Suggestions

The whole floor process will take at least two weeks, and can take longer due to design and weather conditions. A finish Claylin floor is best to be installed at the end of construction, before base trim. Claylin can be installed before or after cabinets.
